A Rational Perspective on Politics & People.

CIVITAS [siv-i-tas; Latin kee-wi-tahs]: citizenship, especially as imparting shared responsibility, a common purpose, and sense of community.

Civitas is a political blog founded in 2016 to provide a thorough, accurate, and rational perspective on American politics and world affairs.

We believe that a well-informed population is the foundation of a successful democracy. To be well-informed, citizens must seek out knowledge, weigh differing opinions, consider others’ points of view, and think critically. To think critically, citizens must differentiate between fact and opinion, check sources, verify information, and remain logically consistent. In the pursuit of knowledge, we must avoid confirmation bias (blindly accepting information that supports one’s point of view, or blindly rejecting information that doesn’t) and seek to be objective.

The American people cannot make good decisions without good information. At Civitas, our goal is to provide good information – verified facts and well-reasoned opinions – so that our readers can stay knowledgeable, understand the issues we face, and make well-informed arguments and decisions. After all, as Thomas Jefferson said:

“…wherever the people are well informed they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights. ”

-Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Richard Price, January 8, 1789.
