As we have previously written, Donald Trump’s cabinet and advisory team is shaping up to be a checklist of Wall Street insiders, career politicians, Goldman Sachs executives, Big Oil representatives, and unqualified Trump supporters ideologically opposed to the missions (or even the existence) of the departments they will be leading.
Add conspiracy theorists to that list. In addition to extremist rumor-monger Michael Flynn, Trump’s national security adviser, Salon’s Heather Digby Parton reports that Fox News personality K. T. McFarland will serve in the important post of deputy national security adviser. McFarland is an unqualified conspiracy theorist who supports the use of torture and profiling Muslims, and she will be shaping policy for the entire executive branch.
After Donald’ Trump’s surprising electoral college victory, many optimists have been hoping that the president-elect would mitigate his recklessness, loose grasp of factual reality, and lack of qualifications by surrounding himself with reasonable, experienced people. But as Parton points out:
Even that might not be so frightening if Trump were surrounded by a team of level-headed professionals who could keep an eye on the details and make sure he didn’t go off half-cocked. But if Trump’s incoming deputy national security adviser K.T. McFarland is an example of the people he’s going to rely on, we’ve got a big problem. She’s a conspiracy theorist, too.
