Now in its fifth year, Giving Tuesday is an international day of giving back to charities, communities, and people in need. It was started as a response to the commercialization and consumerism of the holiday season, and has grown every year – in 2015, donations reached nearly $117 million. Hopefully 2016 will be the biggest Giving Tuesday yet!

If you would like to help out a cause you care about, Giving Tuesday is a great day to do it. Your donation combined with donations from across the world can add up to some pretty spectacular numbers, which makes the news, which spreads awareness and encourages more people to donate and volunteer.

Not sure where to donate? Here are some suggestions from Civitas. Most of those are non-profits dedicated to helping groups that we feel are particularly threatened by the current political climate. If you want to make sure your donation will be used wisely and efficiently, take a look at this USA Today article about vetting organizations and smart giving.

Whatever form your #GivingTuesday takes, the important thing is that we all do what we can. Helping others increases empathy, caring, and understanding – and we need those now more than ever.

Happy Giving Tuesday!
